Homemade Kahlua

4 cups water*
1/2 cup instant coffee* - see note below

4 cups brown sugar

1/2 liter vodka **update** I recently made a batch with a full liter of vodka on accident and actually liked it a bit a bit more, so I would say use a minimum of a 1/2 liter

2 vanilla beans or 2 Tablespoon vanilla

Combine water, instant coffee, and brown sugar in large pot and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. This is important because the boiling point for alcohol is 79°. If you put the vodka in before it has cooled to at least this temperature, you risk loosing some of the alcohol to evaporation. Combine the vodka with the cooled coffee mixture. Cut the vanilla beans in half and place into a clean 1 liter glass bottle. Fill bottle with the coffee liquer and give it a shake. The black specks floating around are the seeds from the vanilla bean also called “vanilla caviar”. Yum! Store in a cool, dark place for at least 2 weeks. The longer it sits, the tastier it gets but that is usually as long as I can wait.

* You can substitute 4 cups of your favorite strongly brewed coffee for the water and instant coffee. I actually had some decent instant that a friend brought me back from Jamaica in my last batch that worked out great but use whatever you like.

I make my own schnapps and kahlua. LOVE IT! The schnapps is not as syrupy as store bought, so goes down smooth but will kick your butt. This you can make and drink the same day. I have taken it to parties still warm. I do use Everclear for my recipes. I have a basic kahlua recipe I have been making and drinking for 20+ years. When I discovered Watkins Caramel flavoring..................now all I make is Caramel Kahlua. And Walmart sells the Watkins Caramel Flavoring. So for about $20 in supplies for a "batch" you get 5-fifths of Caramel Kahlua. My SIL calls it liquid snickers.

Walmart alos sells the candy flavoring to make most schnapps.

Not sure if it would be appropriate to make some up on Christmas Eve, have to attend church for services. Then on Christmas, will have to drive to friends for holiday, drinking and driving. I may save for Monday because off work and by then may just need that toddy.

All those sound so good_My favorite is Mud Slide-Anybody got a recipe for that? It's expensive to me!

SouthPStitches 12-23-2011 03:33 PM

This thread is just too darned funny. So much for the general public thinking quilters are a bunch of tee-toodling grannies (not that there is anything wrong with that either!). We do know how to enjoy life, don't we all?!

My recipe for homemade Bailey's calls for heavy whipping cream; no instant coffee and no almond flavoing. I'll be trying this one! :)

Somewhere in my recipe file I do have a recipe for Kahlua, and I do recall it takes Everclear. Good sippin' stuff!

coldquilter 01-07-2012 09:18 PM

I love fellow quilters who enjoy a little drink now and then. Kahlua is my absolute favorite drink, in a tall glass of milk and it's just like chocolate milk. I cannot wait to try this recipe. Stuff in the store is kind of expensive now. I used to go to Mexico every year and bring home a supply but don't travel anymore with the chaos in Mexico. Thanks so much for the recipes.

Would you share your recipes? I have never had Caramel Kahlua. Do you flavor your schnapps?

time2quilt 01-08-2012 05:12 PM

OK, I've got to get my two cents in here. First of all, I live in MO too AND I DO drink. I've got to share some of my favorite recipes......and thanks to y'all who shared yours.

These are after dinner type ice cream drinks. For each one, start with 3 scoops vanilla ice cream Brandy Alexander- 1 oz. brandy, 1/2 oz. dark creme de cocoa (plus the 3 scoops vanilla ice cream) blend and serve with a sprinkle of nutmeg on top. Copper Penny 1 oz. amaretto, 1/2 oz. Kahlua (plus the ice cream) blend and serve. Grasshopper 1 oz. green creme de menthe, 1/2 oz. white creme de cocoa + ice cream, blend and serve. Tumbleweed 1 oz. tequila, 1/2 oz. Kahlua + ice cream, blend and serve. Pink Squirrel 1 oz. creme de noya, 1/2 oz. white creme de cocoa + ice cream. Blend and serve. AND I love this one for the Summer - Summer Punch. 1 large can frozen lemonade, non diluted. Fill that lemonade can with prepared cranberry juice, add 1 cup vodka and 1 can beer. Refrigerate and serve over ice. Enjoy-!
