Here is my version of Hot Fudge Pudding Cake

Cake Recipe

2 cups flour
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 cup sugar
4 heaping Tablespoon cocoa
1 cup milk
4 Tablespoon shortening

==================
Pudding Recipe

3 Cups Sugar
12 heaping tablespoons cocoa
--------------------------------
5 1/4 cup hot water

Melt the shortening in a bowl. Add the sugar and mix. In a seperate bowl mix the flour and cocoa and add the baking powder.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix well.

No need to butter or flour the pan. So pour the cake mix into a deep baking dish. Spread the batter over the bottom of the pan.

Combine the sugar and cocoa for the pudding in a bowl. Mix well. Spread this evenly over the batter.

Now slowly pour water over the sugar/cocoa mix until you have added all the water.

Bake for 40 to 45 mins at 350 degrees.

When it is done it will have the cake floating at the top and the cake will be cracked and dry looking. That is normal for this cake. Serve with ice cream or as is.

I think it is even better after it has cooled and set. When you first take it out of the oven the pudding is more like chocolate sauce but as it cools it will set more into a pudding consistency.

Enjoy!!

It's printing out as I type this Rhonda - this is an intriguing one for me, I have never heard of anything like it. Can't wait to try it.

Lesley if you aren't a lover of deep chocolate you can do less cocoa. I happen to like it to taste like chocolate and not just look light brown.

So I do go heavy on the cocoa which is not the original recipe. It is just a matter of taste!!

Yes wvdek this is to die for!!!! I haven't made it in awhile. The really funny part is that the pudding ingredients start out on top of the cake batter and the pudding ends up on the bottom with the cake rising through the water and looking like a desert on the top!! It will be cracked some but it is delicious!!! It isn't the purtiest cake you've ever seen but if you are a chocolate lover this is absolute heaven!!

Several times I've had very large servings ( ) of a hot fudge pudding cake with vanilla ice cream on top.
It was better than.....anything!
I don't know if it was this same recipe but, Oh Boy, it was good!
I've copied it all down.
Thanks for posting it.

okay -- when is the milk added? I added it to the shortening/sugar mix. But, when all mixed - before baking, it's rather dry....is that what it's supposed to be like?

Okay - before anyone tries this recipe -- check with Rhonda. I discovered the amount of milk is wrong ANd the amount of sugar and water is outrageous. Wish I'd read this BEFORE I wasted ingredients.

Ok I had Admin fix the milk amt. I apologize for the error! It is right now.

As for the sugar and cocoa amt. You can reduce the amt but it will reduce the amt of pudding you get. You will also have to reduce the water a bit too if you reduce the sugar/cocoa amt.

You can cut the recipe in half for a smaller version if you like.

Yummy!! Hot Fudge Pudding!! This was always a treat to have when I was growing up. My mother got this recipe out of a 1954 Women's Day Magazine.
It said cost $.32 per serving. This is just alittle different and 1/2 the amount.

mix:
1 c Flour
2 tsp. Baking Powder
1 tsp Salt
2/3 c Sugar
2 T. Cocoa

mix:
1/2 c Milk
2 T Melted Butter
1 tsp Vanilla

then mix these all together. Spoon into greased 9 x 9 pan. Sprinkle over with mixture of: 1 c. Brown Sugar and 4 T. Cocoa

pour over this 1 & 1/2 c. Boiling Water. Bake @ 350 for 40 min.

The rest is like Rhonda said. Heaven!

Oh, forgot, it said serves 8. So it was and still is a very inexpensive treat.
