Ingredient

Today I bought a great 1992 cookbook at a library book sale. A recipe for Curried Pasta and Chicken Salad includes an ingredient listed as "3/4 C mayonnaise-type salad dressing". Would you interpret this as being mayonnaise or Miracle Whip? Thanks

I would think they are referring to Miracle Whip vs mayonnaise.

yes, Miracle Whip, without naming a brand name in the printed book.

Ladies, I thought that too.....but when the ingredients are listed in the instructions it says mayonnaise. Confused!

Contrary to the others, I would read it to mean mayonnaise, not Miracle Whip.
Some would not think of mayo as salad dressing, others would.
Some would equivocate mayo and MW, others would not.
So I am thinking it was just this person's way of clarification.

Plus ... today, most would never think of mayo other than from the store.
Mayonnaise was commonly made at home, in days gone by!

I think it could be either-use what you have on hand.

Years ago when it was packaged in glass the label on Miracle Whip included the words "salad dressing". https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2715/4...13d_z.jpg?zz=1

I too agree that they used Miracle Whip but did not want to use the brand name in the printed book. Since this is a recipe for chicken salad you could use Miracle Whip, your favorite brand of mayo or homemade mayonnaise.

In my salads, I often use half mayo and half miracle whip. I like the taste of them together.

I would use which ever it is that you like.

I agree you could use either. I think for a curry type salad I would opt for the "salad dressing" as opposed to the mayonnaise as it has a slightly sweeter taste that would go well with curry.
