You know..the one that you see at bbq's & picnics, its got marshmallows, mandarin oranges, probably some whip cream & cherries to make it pink?
Had some at a wedding picnic and would like to make for July 4th.
Can anyone help? Oh..and i could really go for some right now haha

don't know if this is the one you're looking for but here's what I do---
1 container Cool Whip
1 container small curd cottage cheese
1 pkg Jello (flavor depends on what fruits you add)
chopped fruit - strawberries, mandarin orange sections cut up, crushed pineapple
If I use strawberries then I sprinkle some strawberry Jello to give it a pink color and so on. Don't need the whole package, just to taste and color.
My family loves it.

Hawaiian Salad...
1 large can drained pineapple chunks
1 large can mandarin oranges
1 jar drained marachino cherries
2 cups mini marshmallows
1 container Cool Whip shredded coconut optional

Drain all fruits well. Add cool whip and marshmallows to fruit and fold till mixed. Make morning of the affair. Does not hold up for more than 24 hours, starts to get runny.
Refridgerate.

I think you are wanting the recipe for Ambrosia ?

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/a...ipe/index.html

misscarol 06-23-2011 03:46 AM

I love your subject line. My husband would say something like, "What is she talking about?"
It made me laugh that so many of us knew exactly what you were talking about. I think it's a woman thing :) :)!

clynns 06-23-2011 03:58 AM

My husband would probably start typing without looking for the recipe. I'm very fortunate. He's a fantastic cook. Some things he cooks better than me. Like sausage gravy and biscuits, fried potatoes, pizza from scratch. And I let him and play dumb. LOL

We call it "Snow Salad" in my family.

1 - 8 oz. package cream cheese, softened
1/4 c. maraschino cherry juice
1 carton Cool Whip
16 maraschino cherries, cut into pieces
2 small cans mandarin oranges
1 large can pineapple chunks
2 cups mini marshmallows

Blend cream cheese with cherry juice, then mix in Cool Whip. Drain fruit and fold into Cool Whip mixture. Fold in mini marhsmallows. Refrigerate for several hours before serving.

Psychomomquilter 06-23-2011 05:04 AM

ooooo! that sounds soooo good!how many does it serve.

the ambrosia says 6 servings, so do these others serve 6?

KimmieH 06-23-2011 05:30 AM

5 cup fruit salad is what we called them in our family & they're popular at family gatherings!
mandarin oranges
crushed pineapples
sour cream
coconuts
mini marshmallows

Never had cherries in ours but don't see why you couldn't....

But Ambrosia is what im thinking you're looking for? If so, i'll update on that one per your request.

Can someone please tell me what 'Cool Whip' is? We don't have anything called that in Scotland!

KimmieH 06-23-2011 10:36 AM

Sorry, Cool Whip is a kind of whipping cream. But, it has some artificial ingredients in it.

I don't know that real whipped cream would work. The cream doesn't have any stabilizers in it and I'd be afraid that all the liquid that is inherent in the fruit would break down the cream and it would get runny.

I might be wrong, but it was just a thought. Maybe someone has already tried it and knows for sure?

madamekelly 06-23-2011 01:44 PM

This is a recipe I found many years ago, and do not remember the source. My family calls it "Foam"

1 small container of small curd cottage cheese
1 small container of Whipped topping
1 small container sour cream
2 cups cut up fruit
1 small package jello (in a flavor to go with fruit)

Combine all ingredients in a medium size non-metal bowl. Stir to blend. Refrigerate for 2 or more hours in a covered bowl. Serve. (I have used larger containers, and the bigger box of Jello for crowds and it works too!)

do you have something like dream whip? that was a boxed version of it...that all you added was water.

cr12cats 06-23-2011 01:52 PM

here is a green one:

1 large can pineapple
1 package pastashio pudding (regular or sugar free)
1 tub of cool whip ( whatever brand you like
then you can add whatever you like such as coconut, marshmallows, more nuts

drain the pineapple juice into bowl and stir pudding in to it. it will be thick.
add pineapple and stir
add whipping cream mix it all up

then refrigerate to chill. i usually can't wait and take some before refrigerating it.
great for st patricks day

My mother made this salad every Christmas. We called it "pink salad."

deranged_damsel 06-23-2011 08:28 PM

Frog eye salad has acini di pepe in it. could that be it?

mack 06-24-2011 04:37 AM

Thank you, I used to buy dream whip for my family who didn't like full cream, but as they have all flown the nest and made nests of their own I haven't looked for it for years. Off to take my 88 year old Mum for her shopping now so I'll have a look.
Thanks to everyone who replied.

KimmieH 06-24-2011 05:13 AM

never thought of that Carol...best stick with the coolwhip..thanks
