Kale Chips! Love them!

These are so good! I like them better then potato chips and I can eat as many as I want with no guilt. Added bonus DH will eat them instead of chips with his sandwich. Great in a salad, adds a lot of crunch instead of croutons.

Pull Kale from the stem in about 2" size
Be sure the Kale is completely dry
Lay in single layer on baking sheet
drizzle olive oil over the Kale
Add a sprinkling of salt, not much, the Kale will dehydrate and get salty
Bake 20 mins at 275 degrees
Turn over the Kale and bake about 15 more.

Interesting, I have never heard of these. But they sound like a great snack!

BCM 03-17-2013 04:22 AM

Do you know if these can be tried with other greens?

coopah 03-17-2013 04:27 AM

My DDIL made these last summer...I was glad we were not there to have to try them. While I admire her ability to find new ways to eat healthy things, I was glad not to be there to try them. :-) Glad you like them. She has also made beet chips.

I grew kale one year in lower MI. It was so bitter, I couldn't eat it, but I had three canaries that thought they had died and gone to bird heaven.

Quilt-Till-U-Wilt 03-17-2013 06:32 AM

I'll definitely try this. I have to laugh when people say they don't like kale. If you buy it fresh it's good. I bought it frozen and the stems were mixed in and it was awful. I drink carrot juice and people laugh over that. I make my own in the juicer with celery and apple and it's so sweet. I even have my husband drinkng it.

Elisabrat 03-17-2013 06:54 AM

Ok love them completely. I use sea salt not regular salt and yes they are horribly ugly. they look like ..dried seaweed. I had a friend in the veggie department last year bring me a bag he made and said I HAD to try them and stared at me while I held the bag. I thought oh crud now I have to eat a few. I did said um these were good.. not sure if I liked them. by the time I got to the register I had eaten the whole sandwich bag of them. I made them several times since then and they are very good if you can get past the ugly on looks. I do NOT eat seaweed but kale chips oh yes. oh and sometimes I put parmesean shreds on it too when its baking.. talk about a cheesy salty crispy snack. yum. thanks for posting. not everything healthy is bad tasting at all.

I make these for my vegan daughter all the time. We experiment with different seasonings, the garlic peppercorn rub from Pampered chef was one of her favs.

BellaBoo 03-17-2013 08:22 AM

I cook kale like I do baby spinach, wilted in a little oil and sauteed. The kale needs to be stripped from the stems before cooking. My kids loved it in scrambled eggs and now the grands eat it that way. My family loves fresh picked polk sallet so that may be why we like kale. Kale potato soup is another favorite. Kale use to be almost impossible to find in the grocery stores.

luv-e 03-17-2013 10:14 AM

BellaBoo, We love Kale too!........We take Cannellini Beans, drained and Chicken Broth added. Heat beans and @ the end add Cooked Kale......Homemade Rolls and you have dinner...Yum,Yum
I've have to try it in the Potato Soup..sounds good too! We make the chips all winter too. We use sea salt....

JENNR8R 03-17-2013 11:44 AM

I put olive oil in a spray bottle to apply the oil. It's faster.

I bake them at 425 degrees for only 15 minutes... not a minute more or they will burn.

Sea salt them after baking. Salt brings moisture out of vegetables, and you're trying to dry them out.

I make these every week! :)

glassdriller 03-17-2013 02:45 PM

I was told by a seller at a local farmers market that the red/purple is sweeter/milder in taste. I like both types as chips.

Butterflyblue 03-17-2013 06:10 PM

I am curious if anyone has tried this with other greens? I have some baby spinach in the fridge that I'd like to try making chips with.

twinkie 03-18-2013 03:57 AM

Never tried it before but guess I will have to now. Thanks

Murphy1 03-18-2013 07:43 AM

Thanks for sharing. We are big Kale fans at our house. Most of the time it is a salad, but I will make these today. Kale is at the top in terms of nutritional value, above spinach, so very good for you.

Chasing Hawk 03-18-2013 07:57 AM

Never cared for Kale, but I do love spinach. But with all leafy green veggies I have to watch how much I eat. Being on blood thinners to much vitamin K is bad.

lbc 03-18-2013 10:23 AM

Costco now has a vegetable mix for a salad that is kale, broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, and others I can't remember all cut in fine pieces and it is really good. Comes with pumpkin seeds and a poppy seed dressing. Those of you who have a costco might want to try it. It is in the refrigerated section with the vegetables and fruits.

CAS49OR 03-18-2013 10:57 AM

Thanks for the great idea! I bet it tastes like kelp chips which I hear are good.

squires1042 03-18-2013 02:39 PM

Tried Kale for the first time last year, but it was chopped and cooked with a little bacon garlic and some sea salt, I'm going back to the same place next month going to try and get the recipe. I had heard that Kale chips were good going to have to try it now.

AnnaF 03-18-2013 05:44 PM

What is Polk Sallet?? Sounds like something that grows in the garden but I've never heard of it

The kale chips sound delicious!!

seasaw2mch 03-18-2013 09:50 PM

ok I love kale but have never hear of doing this. Can I do this in my dehydrator without the oil? Or do you need the oil to make them crisp?

phatquilts2 03-19-2013 03:28 AM

will try this soon - thanks..wol is there a particular variety that anyone likes?

some seem more bitter than others & I usually purchase from vg stands organic.

williesmom 03-25-2013 12:59 PM

I made kale chips last year from home-grown kale. I felt like a cow munching on grass. It was awful. I do like kale, just not as chips!

Quilts rock 05-15-2013 03:33 AM

For anyone that suffers from arthritis, Kale is good for relieving the pain. I know it sounds weird but its right up there with spinach. I have never tried the chips , but I will now. Thanks for the recipe!

SavedByGrace 05-15-2013 03:38 AM

I tried that a few weeks ago, but they tasted really bitter. Did I just get a bad batch or is that kind of how it tastes?

Damsel in DisDress 07-10-2013 08:00 PM

I make kale this way all the time! SOOOO Good! Krispy is the way to go!

Annaquilts 07-10-2013 09:41 PM

Love kale and seaweed and eat them both on a regular basis just plain or mixed in with food. My kids like kale steamed with potatoes. After steaming it is all mashed like mashed potatoes except there is steamed kale in there. top it all with a meatball. we also make sushi with seaweed. I have not tried kale chips as I want to stay away from too much oil. I did have seaweed that is sold and is much like you describe the kale chips. We also eat plain toasted seaweed.

One tip is to slice the kale as thin as you can before adding them to the potatoes. I cook it all together in one pot. We eat the stems and everything.

Annaquilts 07-10-2013 09:43 PM

LOL I haven't tried the chips yet but from your description I might pass. Thanks for the good laugh.

Annaquilts you use very little oil. like 3 tsp for a whole bunch of kale. I don't find them bitter but it is maybe a bit of an aquired taste? I love them. But the first bite is like .. what the heck? then they grow on you truly they do if you like veggies its just a nice variety. I think spinach is too delicate if you ask me. its thinner and a bit more watery than kale is therefore would be something you would have to watch super close not sure about the dehydrator. Surely someone has tried it before.

patchsamkim 07-13-2013 10:54 AM

Thanks for sharing this recipe...I have been changing to a much more healthy lifestyle which means a much healthier diet and am trying so many more foods...have come to like kale...so will give these a try.

Tropical 07-13-2013 10:39 PM

I use kale in my fruit and veggie drinks I make with my Nutri Bullet every morning. My DH doesn't like greens in his drinks and I can't use a bunch of kale before it spoils. So I steam it and then freeze it in one cup containers. I buy a big bag of chopped kale and it lasts me quite a long time. I also like a small bit of fresh kale in my daily salads. I am going to try this recipe. Thanks for posting it. :):):)

craftynell 07-21-2013 10:34 AM

I steam it & use it in place of lettuce. It is great. We love it!!!

williesmom 07-21-2013 11:07 AM

Polk Sallet tastes fantastic, it grows wild everywhere around here. I have never seen it for sale probably because it has to be picked and cooked (boiled three times) just right or could make you very sick. Never eat it raw in a salad. It's full of vitamins. Back when, it was one of the first greens to grow before the gardens produced. Everyone knew it would replenish your body with the vitamins not often available in winter foods. Here is a video how to harvest and cook it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UYb3txLoh0
