Last minute Breadsticks (really quick and always turn out great)

I have been making these for about 25 years now. Family and friends just love them. So easy to make.

1 1/2 cups warm water
1 Tblsp yeast
1 Tblsp sugar
Combine above ingredients together and let stand until foamy.
Add 1/2 tsp salt and 3 cups flour. Mix well. Add about another 1/2 cup flour and mix in with your hands until it forms a soft dough. Cover and let rest 15 minutes (you can skip this if you are really in a hurry)

Roll dough into a rectangle about 10" x 17". Cut dough into 1" wide strips.
Melt 1 cube of butter and pour into the center of a large baking sheet.

Dip each side of each breadstick in the butter and place on baking sheet touching each other.
Sprinkle lightly with garlic salt. Let raise 15 - 30 minutes (or longer if you have time)
Bake about 12 minutes at 350 degrees Note: I don't preheat the oven. The dough raises a little while the oven is warming. I usually double the batch and sprinkle one sheet of breadsticks with a cinnamon/sugar mixture. I hope you enjoy them. Peggy

Thanks for the yummy sounding recipe! Can't wait to try these!!

What do you mean by a "cube" of butter? A stick seems like too much, but then again, they'd REALLY be good.

Thank you for sharing. They look GOOOOOOOOOD! My DGD would love these.

Thanks so much, I use to make these all the time while the kids were growing up then stopped and forgot the receipe. Simple as it is I just couldn't remember. I'm going straight home after work to make them!

What type of yeast do you use? The rapid rise or the active dry?

KatFish 01-17-2012 01:31 PM

Those look yummy! I'll have to try this one.

Just regular active yeast.

The recipe calls for 1 stick of butter. I sometimes only use 3/4 of a stick. The butter makes them crispy on the bottom so they are really good.

They look wonderful....I can't wait to make some! Have you ever made them with wheat flour? I just try to stay away from white flour...but garlic flavored wheat breadsticks would be super with a plate of wheat or multi-grain spaghetti!!

Thank you for sharing!

Yes I have made them with wheat flour but they didn't raise as quickly and my kids didn't really care for them.
