Try using a bowl that has a air tight lid. Put a damp paper towel in the bottom and then put lettuce in. Seal tight and store in frig. Keeps well this way.

I use 2 large bowls to clean all veggies
Cut my lettuce first then wash: 1st bowl: 1/2 to 1 cup vinegar and 1 or 2 drops of dawn in cold water to wash clean 2nd bowl: just vinegar and cold water to rinse Use a salad spinner to get the moisture out Lay your lettuce onto paper towels to wrap and put into a zip lock bag, take most of the air out. Apples must give off a gas that ripens fruit faster so keep them zip locks. All fruit and veggies should be washed this way then put away. |
A friend swears by storing romaine in a gallon Mason jar topped with plastic wrap. I finally tried it recently, and the lettuce did stay fresh and crisp longer than usual. I have no idea if there is any real science behind it.

I have found that buying Romaine lettuce, my favorite, keep about 3 weeks for me. I cut off the core, wash by running cold water thru it and then in a large storage bag, lined with wet paper towels (maybe two or three pieces) I put the lettuce in it and seal it up and put in fridge. I usually buy the package of lettuce that has 3 heads in it and I am only one person and it keeps a very, long time.!

Use your romaine in things other than salads...use those big leaves for sandwich wraps, or as a taco shell, or split them in half, and char them for a side dish...don’t let them go to waste, be creative!

Check ebay for the tupperware lettuce keeper. I still have one and it really works well.

Lots of good ideas and will start trying some to see how it goes for me.
I did take out my crisper drawers and have 4 containers holding my fresh items. More room on the rest of the shelves as not much was in each drawer. Geri B, thank you for starting this thread. |
I keep mine (Romaine & loose leaf lettuce) in my salad spinner. First I dip the entire head in a sink of cold water, then I stick it in the spinner, pour out some of the water so that the remainder sits below the bowl, and then if the head is too large to stick in there whole, I break it up. Keeps for about 2 weeks in the fridge.

head lettuce seems to freeze for me yet the prepackaged stuff does not. It is more expensive but I throw less away

When I eat salads I buy the packaged salad mix, family size, 2 bags. I open bag and then close it up by pushing air out and close the top, folded down and clamp shut with pinching clothespins. It last at least two weeks sometimes longer. In the summer I normally eat two bags, so it is gone in about 1 week.
