Looking for fruit recipe
About 50 years ago my father brought home a fruit compote someone had given him over the holidays. It was almost like mincemeat pie filling. We put it over ice cream. It was a German-sounding name...something like frukestoppen (please forgive my bad German and bad memory!) Anyone know what this is? Thanks.

Would this be the one that you kept on the kitchen counter and fed every couple of weeks with one cup fruit and one cup sugar to keep it replenished? And the if you had too much, you gave some to a friend to start their own pot?
Sorry I don't have the recipe for this one .... but whether it is or isn't, if someone does have the recipe to start this, I'd appreciate it too! |
Am eagerly awaiting recipe ----

this site has the recipe I used to use and it also has the proper German recipe for Rumtopf. I never put rum in with the fruit and sugar, it made a wonderful topping without it. Jan in MI |
Sounds like Swedish Fruit Soup to me. I used to serve it as a side dish with beef. For several years I was given the main dish at progressive New Year's Eve dinners so I would serve this. I don't remember my recipe having raisins or currants - but I could have just picked the raisins out.

Thank you all for the recipes. I can't wait to get started!

Sounds like rumtopf to me as well. I have made this before and it is so delicious on ice cream. We used the summer fruits and kept it on the counter. There are many recipes out there plus beautiful containers you can buy to make it in. Most kitchen stores carry them. You want to use a crock type container because glass jars let in to much in.

We had a similar recipe in our house. My aunt would get it going every fall so that it was "ready" by Christmas. We nicknamed it "Worthy"...because it was SOOOOO good, you had to be worthy to have some!!! LOL

You got me curious so I googled "frukestoppen" and found "fruktsoppa" which is fruit soup in Swedish. BTW, I just found out that google translator will translate almost anything for you. You don't even have to know in which language. Just copy and paste and it will translate. Amazing.
