Montmorency sour cherries
I happened in at the local farmers market today, just at closing time. One vendor had baskets of these cherries at half price and I couldn't resist. Now I get to pit 2 huge baskets of sour cherries and freeze them. I always make pie with them and would like to try something different. Anyone care to share a favourite recipe for sour cherries?

Don't have a recipe but I would be willing to come for coffee when you do some baking!

I do my sour cherries into pies. I wonder if you could use them (cut in half) in place of the rhubarb in the rhubarb cake recipe I posted?

Those are the kind of cherries we have here in Wisconsin's Door County. Yummy! They're good in coffee cake or muffins, cobbler, stuffing for pork roast, sauce for pork or ham. They're also great as chocolate covered cherries or as dried fruit, but I don't know how to do those.

Where did you find cherries? All I can find here are from the USA and I'm trying to buy local. Please PM me! I'm getting desperate. |

My favorite recipe is in the old Betty Crocker Cookbook and is listed at Rhubarb Custard Pie. I use only one crust, and substitute any tart or sour fruit in place of the rhubarb, such as gooseberries, etc.
The ingredients are: Beat slightly-3 eggs, then add 2 2/3 T milk. Mix together and stir in 2 cups sugar, 4 T flour, and 3/4 t nutmeg.(In cherry pie ,I substitute 1/3 t almond flavoring.) Add 4 cups fruit . Pour into prepared crust and dot with butter-1 T. Bake at 400 degrees for 50-60 minutes |

This is almost the same as the rhubarb custard pie that I make. Never thought to substitute cherries for the rhubarb. I am going to try that. Thanks daesy3.

I make cherry jam and this year, I also made jalapeno-cherry jam that was a hit with friends who love foods that "kick it up a notch."

Homemade cherry kirsch. Fill a gallon jar with cherries. Pour in 2 cups of white sugar. Pour in a 26 ounce bottle of vodka. Stir then put the lid on. Let it sit for a few weeks until all the cherries have sunk. When this happens it's ready. Strain the cherries and place the kirsch in pretty bottles. I pit the strained cherries and make filling for black forest torte out of it.

Cherry crisp just like apple crisp/crunch but use the sour cherries...mmmmmmmm

I make sour cherry preserve from my own sour cherry tree, we use it instead of the store bought jam on our muffins, etc. or on rice pudding/tapioca or ice cream, soooo delicious!!!!!!!!!
