Navy beans

Do you soak your beans overnight as the packages suggests? I just put mine in a pot with water to simmer a couple of hours before I want to eat them and they cook just fine.

That’s what I do also. The Instapot does a great job too if you have one!

Iceblossom 05-18-2021 01:44 PM

I do the overnight soak when I can, mostly just because. Have also done the "fast" method.

Sometimes you get the beans that just don't cook right and stay sort of scrunchy no matter what you do. I think that is a storage issue -- maybe starts about 5-10 years after harvest.

I rinse and start my beans bring them to a boil and cook maybe 15 minutes. Pour off the water into a colander and restart them. They cook faster and have a more pure taste to them. The last fifteen minutes or so I put spices, onions or garlic in to the water to give them some flavor sometimes. Not always, depends on my wants for that day.

I use the Instant Pot too. First I bring them to a boil using sauté, no pressure, then dump that water and go from there. We love all kinds of beans and the Instant Pot makes it so quick

I soak mine overnight whenever I can. I agree with Iceblossom, sometimes I get some beans that are not fully done when I do it the fast way.

I love my instant pot! I make refried beans with pinto's without soaking. All others I soak and cook for less time.

Soaked overnight.

Sassylass 05-20-2021 03:46 AM

I don't soak....just wash and throw in the instant pot. In 90 mins I can have a pot of baked beans.....works for me!!

I have to say that I am an old fashioned gal. I soak my beans overnight, bring to a boil and simmer for 1 hour, drain and throw beans and all the other ingredients into my big roaster. They go into the oven at 275 for 4-5 hours. I usually make a double batch because they freeze well.

I have stopped adding salt to the water. I found it made for a much tougher bean. Instead, I wait until the last hour of cooking, to add the salt and any other spices.

I don't do an over night soak. Recently I started using my Instapot.

sewingsuz 05-21-2021 09:31 AM

I soak every kind over night.

Irishrose2 05-21-2021 10:10 AM

I do the quick soak. Bring beans and water to a boil, turn the burner off for an hour, then cook as usual. Sometimes i drain off that water and start with fresh.

I always soak my navy beans overnight and then put them in my crockpot with seasonings and savor the smell all day long.

I soak any and all beans overnight with baking soda. Next day I drain and rinse beans real good. I cook several hours add ham chunks add salt and pepper. Serve with hot cornbread.

I always soak my beans overnight to get rid of the phytic acid. After 12 hours I rinse them well and cook them in fresh water with nothing else. Doing that makes the beans more digestible and healthier for you and much less gas. I don’t add salt till the beans are tender otherwise the beans will be tough. I cook on stove top in Le Creuset. Beans are incredibly healthy and loaded with fiber. Dr Fuhrman says they “sweep” your colon!

Beans might not cook all the way if the water is hard. I have to purchase water to cook beans.

I sort and rinse my beans, add a ham hock and pressure for 2 hours, then I add salt and Hatch green chili and freeze in portions.

I don't plan far enough ahead to soak overnight! I put dried pintos in the crock pot and add water, a can of Ro-tel tomatoes, onion, and spices like cumin and garlic. I feel that the water absorbed by the beans has more flavor.

I do not soak mine, however, I do add a pinch of soda when boiling the 15 minutes, it removes "the gas."

Since I use either Navy or Northern Beans, I soak mine overnight. Then the next morning I drain and rinse them. Put them in a pot of water with 2 teaspoons of baking soda. Bring to a boil and skim off the foam. Boil for at least 30 - 45 minutes. Drain and pour beans into a pot, add the remaining ingredients, water and stir together. Cover the handles with a piece of aluminum foil. Bake in 350 degree oven for 4 hours.

Chasing Hawk 08-01-2022 07:38 AM

Sounds yummy, haven't had Navy or Northern beans in such a long time. Dad would cook Northern beans with a leftover ham bone. Homemade biscuits served with our meal.

craftymatt2 08-01-2022 09:50 AM

I make ham and beans so I soak mine over night. I have tried the fast method and it did and ok job.

Peckish 08-01-2022 11:06 AM

Instant Pot, they go from dried in the bag to ready to use in any recipe calling for canned beans within 30 minutes. I add a tablespoon of vinegar after they come out of the IP to defeat the gas.
