We had what DH calls "the reason it's best to stick with old recipes" I just don't have much luck with new recipes & this was yucky. Sounded simple, from Kraft...ground meat with onion, add small amt of steak sauce & catsup, bake in a bisquick crust....
Meat was fresh from meat mkt I followed the recipe.......but it was just not tasty.:( :(
We ended up having dessert for dinner, so not a total loss.

Do you have good luck trying new recipes?

Scrap Happy 04-09-2011 02:29 AM

Yes, usually I have luck with a new recipe but sometimes a recipe just isn’t that good. Most times I don’t follow a recipe exactly and may change the amounts or add something else too. My DH’s Mom used to make something similar to what you tried without the bisquick, just ground meat, salt, pepper worcester & onions (I add fresh garlic too.) On the side she’d always make mash potatoes and peas with it. Sometimes when I make it I’ll make gravy to go with it too.

Pat, Yes!!! sometimes they look and sound so much better than when you cook and taste them.......
At least you had dessert, wasn't a total loss... lol lol lol

clem55 04-09-2011 09:41 AM

yep!! Lots and lots of times, so we pretty much keep to old standbys, and once in awhile, hubs tries to do things a different way, then we call out for fast food.LOL

plainpat 04-09-2011 02:59 PM

If he cooks.....you can't complain.Eat McDees! :)

If he had his way, a meal would be dessert :)

He does almost all the cooking! And when he doesn"t feel like it, we just fix whatever we want for ourselves. It sure works for me!!

b.zang 04-09-2011 07:04 PM

I often try out new recipes to take to a potluck.
My theory?
If it's terrible, well, everyone has a bit and I wasn't stuck with all this awful food at home.....
and if it's delicious, then I know to make it again for us.

plainpat 04-10-2011 02:10 AM

Lucky you!!! But I can't complain. My DH eats whatever I make & never says a word unless I complain 1st ..:thumbup:He'll do anything to help out & does a good job.

I love trying new recipes. I usually do for company. It's just kind of fun to make new stuff.

If I make a particular recipe and don't overly care for it, then I cross it off in the cookbook it's in so I don't make the mistake more than once! So far, none have been horrible, but just not something I really enjoyed....

Cris 04-10-2011 04:40 AM

That kinda sounds like BBQ Cups, don't remeber where the recipe came from but was originally made with hamburger cooked with onion then bbq sauce. One bisquit into each muffin, then meat then cheese. Now I make it with pork, just cut up sorta small cooked with chopped onion, then add bbq sauce to it (sweet baby rays is alwys good) just to coat mixture. Because I didn't like cleaning the muffin tins, I just spread the bisquits into a 13x9 pan, put the meat/sauce on top and add cheddar chease cook abot 15-20 til muffins are done. Yummy!

Oh, don't feel bad, I have pitched many new recipes I cooked! Keep trying!

rexie 04-10-2011 06:09 AM

I, for some reason like to try new recipes right before a church dinner or company coming and seldom do they turn out like I would like for them to.

Johanna Fritz 04-10-2011 06:25 AM

I have had a similar recipe and it turned out great...but no steak sauce in the recipe. I like Taste of Home website. BTW Bisquick also has a site. I try at least 1 new recipe a week.

kathome 04-10-2011 09:21 AM

I rarely make a new recipe as written. Just reading it I can usually figure out what I'd like more or less of to suit our tastes. For instance, lots of recipes call for just browned chop meat and then whatever. I KNOW to have a base of what we like to add onion and garlic.

Things like that. (Oh, and I always season each "layer")

I haven't had much luck with Kraft recipes. They just don't have enough spices and flavor. I think they just focus on putting in as many of their products that they can but they'd sell more if they made their recipes taste better.

Teddybear Lady 04-10-2011 01:26 PM

My husband always says..."eat dessert first, life's too short"!

plainpat 04-10-2011 01:55 PM

He must be related to my DH ? I like the meal best....no room left for dessert. :)

EXACTLY!

I found that some of these recipes are concocted by folks with no taste buds.

quiltermo 04-10-2011 06:49 PM

I make a recipe simalar to this. Instead of steak sauce use your favorite barbeque sauce and when your crust is almost done sprinkle grated cheese on top and let it melt. My kids called this hamburger pie and they loved it. Brown your hamburger and add your onion and bbq sauce then put in your unbaked biscuit crust and bake. Add your grated cheese at the end and let it melt.

bob1414 04-11-2011 08:19 AM

I probably try 3-4 new recipes each week as I have a collection of over 500 cookbooks (what was I thinking?!!). I think about 30-50% are "keepers". The last awful recipe was a pork stew using Hatch chiles. Lots of work and it all got thrown out!

plainpat 04-11-2011 11:46 AM

Thanks, but think I'll stick with tried & true. :)

I always go overboard when I have an interest in something. It's a disease!

LOL that's why you're a quilter!

I did a new one for supper last night.. the rest went in the trash. I am taking the blame. It was NOT good at all.. It sounded good and that is how I judge a new recipe.. I goofed this time...

I see I'm not alone!!

barbb baumgardner 04-16-2011 02:23 PM

I tried the 'diet cake' yesterday. We were 10 people and there's not a crumb left today. It was so fabulous. I used triple chocolate cake mix and one can diet cherry coke! That's it! Mixed it up and then baked it in a 9X13 pan (sprayed with Pam) according to the cake mix directions. So no excuses...don't need eggs, oil, etc. Just one can of diet soda. I am definitely going to do this one again. You can use any cake mix and diet soda combination of these two ingredients.

Willa 04-16-2011 09:00 PM

I make some with sloppy joe mix instead of the bbq and ketchup and we love them. We mix the sloppy joe mix with the cooked meat (flavor to your taste), press the biscuits in muffin tin and up sides, spoon in to fill and bake adding cheddar cheese for a couple minutes. These can be frozen for a quick meal later. I used to live near Hastings also.

OHSue 04-18-2011 03:09 AM

I hate when that happens, you are all psyched to add something new to the same old line up of recipes, and then I feel like I just wasted all the ingredients.
