Shortening? Would that be a better word for you?
Not sure what you call it there, but I'm sure you know what shortening is.

I think in the US, Lard is thicker or has something more than what shortening has. I think the shortening NOW is more refined.
When I think of lard, I think of the can that my mom would drain the grease in that sat on the counter. Then when it was full, it was put in a tray, then birdseed was rolled in it and it was hung out at winter for the birds.

yeah we have a brand called cookeen which is a bit more finer than normal lard.

never thought of giving the birds the left over dripping from the beef etc.

might have a good at that LOL

Lard is animal fat. Crisco/shortenings are vegetable-based fats. Don't hear too much about lard now -- unhealthy. My grandmother certainly made the best pie crusts with it, though! Of course, we know now that shortening isn't very good for our arteries either. Just have to take it all in moderation, I guess!

This sounds like a good recipe. I'd be tempted to add some orange zest to the batter.

LuLu: No need to apologize...you are not ignorant! If you put a recipe on here calling for "cookeen" we wouldn't know what you were talking about. Glad you asked about Crisco and told about Cookeen...so now all of us learned a new name for a product we probably use everyday of the year.
