Does anyone have a recipe for old fashion pear preserves? As a child I tasted pear preserves that were made with pears that were really firm, and they had spices in them. I was just given some pears and most of them aren't ripe so I thought about the pear preserves

anything firm, is a butter, it has pieces of fruit that you can see. Preserves are all cooked together, and alot sweeter...I use this pear butter recipe, and also use the same for peaches, they are delicious..

I remember my Mom making what she called Pear Jam, so I looked up the recipe. I haven't made it in years, but it was my favorite and is a lot like the one Suzanne sent.
Pear Jam
Grind 1/2 peck Pears. Add 5 lbs. sugar and let stand over night. Grind 4 oranges, everything but the pulp. With 1 lb. raisins, juice skimmed off pears, orange and rind, simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. Cook pears and orange mixture until thick. Add nuts (Walnuts or Pecans) and put in jars. I can't remember how much! But the nuts make it taste extra good.

Yummy...this sounds like a "conserve" with the raisins and nuts. Would be great on some toasted crusty bread.

It is wonderful on toast! I see you're from Kalamazoo! I am originally from Detroit! We have a lot of family throughout Michigan. We try to spend a while each summer with family in the area.
