Question about cake with soda only

Has anyone tried this recipe? I made it and I have a pie instead of a cake. It didn't rise at all.

I've made it and it rose just the same as a normal cake.

To check .... did you ?????
* use a double layer cake mix?
* add nothing but one can of soda?
* mixed, and baked according to the time and temperature on the box?

The recipe I have says you have to use diet soda.

I have made this cake quite often. I used regular and diet sodas. I even used the flavored sparkling water at Wal-Mart since it is sugar free and it wont give you gross colors. Are you located in a high altitude area? Did you use only 12 oz of soda and one regular box of cake mix? Was the soda fresh (i.e. not flat)? Did you bake the cake in an odd shaped pan (usually wont effect things but you never know).

some of my favorite flavors to make were to use the strawberry flavored carbonated water and mix it with the chocolate cake or a strawberry cake mix. Also the cherry Dr Pepper is excellent with the chocolate cake. Kiwi Strawberry carbonated water with the strawberry cake or even the white cake mix is good. ALL the flavors with a white cake is nice (I especially liked the Peach flavored water with the white cake mix). And ginger ale with a spice cake is interesting as well.

It doesn't matter if you use diet or regular.
Often times this is seen as a "diet" recipe ... thus why the sugar free soda suggestion.

It works fine with either sugar free or regular with sugar soda.

Any flavour of cake mix and soda is possible ... it's really a matter of what you want!

I have made this cake lots of times with regular and diet soda, comes out perfect everytime, just add soda to cake mix, nothing else. I would give it another try, something could of been wrong witht he soda

I have made it numerous times and we love it. I use all different flavors of soda with different cake mixes. Was your cake mix outdated? I found one in the back of my cupboard that was REALLY,REALLY outdated and it didn't rise. YOu can also make the cake with a can of pumpkin. It makes a heavier cake somewhat like a pound cake. Our favorite for the pumpkin is a yellow cake and I add cinnamon, nutmeg and a little clove or allspice to make a spice cake. Also good in chocolate cake mix. I am getting hungry just thinking about it.
