recipes with "odd" ingredients
Looking for above. Here is my "odd" ingredient recipe. It is really good and several have asked for ingredients
Took to quilt retreat and asked people to guess what it was. No one could guess but all said it was awesome. Pork and beans bars/cake 1 16oz can pork and beans 1 8oz crushed pineapple (do not drain) 2 cups sugar 2 cups flour 2 tsp cinnamon 1/2 tsp salt (I don't use) 2 tsp baking soda 1 tsp baking powder 1 cup vegetable oil 4 eggs preheat oven 350 spray or grease flour 9 x 13 pan In a large bowl mash beans and pineapple Add remaining ingredients and mix well Bake 45 to 55 min. Do not underbake done when tooth pick inserted in middle comes out clean Cool completely I frosted with whipped cream cheese frosting. Or make your own. Certainly not a Weight Watcher cake! LOL Lets see what we can all come up with! |
My goodness that is strange! The pork and beans is the oddest! May have to try it on my DH
|
My Grandmother made this cake with Black Beans not the Pork and Beans. I still make it and my grandchildren love it.
|
Sounds interesting.

Foam- 1 small container whipped cream (freezer case) 1 small container sour cream 1 small container small curd cottage cheese 1 can of fruit (drained and chopped if needed) 1 small box regular jello ( any flavor that will work with selected fruit) blend first three ingredients. Add fruit and stir in. Sprinkle dry jello over mixture and stir in. Set in the refrigerator for at least an hour. Serve. (Mandarin orange slices with orange jello, lime jello with pineapple, berry pie filling with berry jello, lemon jello with lemon pie filling is DH favorite, etc.) |
You started out pretty strong with pork and beans so you may have already won hahahah, my mom used to make brownies with sour kraut in them......I think I have the recipe I'll need to look for it.

I found the recipe actually I found one for sauerkraut cake (not brownies) and black eyed pea cake
The following recipies were copied from a well worn and used hand written 3x5 cards I am so glad my mom had such pretty writing it was pretty easy to read, except where the grease smudges are. Sauerkraut cake 2 1/2 cups flour 1tsp baking powder 3/4 cup cocoa 1 stick oleo (margarine for you youngsters) 1 1/2 cups sugar 3 eggs 1/2 cup drained sauerkraut 1 cup milk (this is an older recipe late 60's probably regular milk) 1cup water Combine dry, first 3, ingredients and set aside Cream oleo and sugar, add eggs 1 at a time mixing well Add sauerkraut Add dry ingredients alternating with milk and water. Bake in a large edged cookie sheet or jelly roll pan at 350 for 30 minutes till done Sprinkle top with coconut (yes I know it's not a listed ingredient) Drizzle with glaze. (Yes once again not listed my recipe card says glaze recipe on zucchini card, I can't find that card) the card goes on to read This batter is very thin a real moist delicious cake. I like it better without the coconut. Black eyed pea cake 1 1/2 cups cooking oil 2 1/4 cups sugar 3 egg 1 cup canned unseasoned black eyed peas drained and puréed 1 tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder 2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg 1tsp vanilla 3 cups flour 1 1/2 cups canned pears drained and chopped 1cup chopped pecans Combine sugar, eggs and oil mix well add puréed peas and mix Add dry ingredients, spices, and vanilla mix well Fold in pears, and pecans Pour into greased and floured bundt pan bake 350 degrees for 1 hour 20 minutes. Let cool in pan for 20 minutes before removing from pan. Also good with chopped pineapple instead of pears. Glaze is listed on zucchini card..... Well hell this was apparently a popular glaze and I do not have that card. |

*** I have seen this receipe with pinto beans. *** |
There is a pie made with beans. Also a friend of a friend makes fudge with Velveeta cheese. I have tried some, I was underwhelmed. It tasted like fudge made with cheese.

Can't imagine the pork and beans bars, or the sauerkraut cake ... but I'll try (almost) anything once.
I have two recipe's with odd ingredients. Fire & Ice Salsa Watermelon - small cubes, de-seeded 1 (or 1/2) Habanera pepper - cleaned of seeds and finely chopped (suggest using latex gloves to do this!) tablespoon of finely chopped Cilantro Combine and chill. Serve like any salsa with chips. The other I don't have the actual recipe, but I remember Mom making a "Mock" Apple Pie as a kid. It used potato chips, no apples. It might have had apple sauce though. Oh ... another that I've enjoyed in Thai restaurants many times and have no clue how to make is a soup that is made from Coconut milk, lemon juice, mushrooms and green onions. Delish!!! |
Oops ... one more. This one is my own creation (as far as I know as I've never seen it before)
Raspberry, Walnut and Green Olive salad Dressing 3 parts oil to 1 part Raspberry vinegar Finely chopped walnuts Salt (to taste) Pinch of sugar Salad Mixed greens Chopped walnuts Chopped Green Pimento Olives |
I have made the mock apple pie many times. It uses Ritz crackers instead of apples, spiced and cooked. Sounds yucky but you would swear it was apple pie. A fun thing for April Fools Day.

My mom used to make mock apple pie with ritz crackers too.....I had forgotten about that one it really tasted amazingly good.
The fire and ice salsa looks really good I'm going to try that one for sure. |
My mum also made the mock apple pie, as a child I liked it better than apple pie.
She also made glazed corned beef that had canned pineapple and cola (or it might have been ginger ale) poured over it. It was supposed to taste like ham, don't know why she just didn't make ham! In those days (sixties) it seems like the whole point was to use the strange ingredients rather than thinking about how it would taste. There also used to be recipes for cakes made with tomato soup and with mayonnaise. |
I have made the mock apple pie. I also have the Mashed Potato Spice Cake, Mashed Potato candy and my DGM's red corn cob jelly.
|
I've had the pie with ritz crackers ... but my mother made a different one with potato chips.

That first Recipe has waaaaay too much sugar in it. (Pineappe has sugar in it too). Better warn the diabetics. Seriously. No thanks.

I have a recipe for Pinto Bean Pie that won me a trophy at a pinto bean cookoff many years ago. It's very similar to chocolate pie.
I've also made Mock Coconut Pie using spaghetti squash instead of coconut. You couldn't tell the difference from the real thing. |

So everything about this thread got me interested in going through all of my family's old recipes. and then a found a gem. My parents belonged to a national organization the fleet reserve association. (if you are curious) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fleet_Reserve_Association.
One of the fund raisers was a cookbook they put together from several of their members. The one I have was the first printing that they went through and corrected before doing a mass printing for sale. It's actually very cool all the hand written notes on several of the recipes with corrections of amounts or ingredients. This book was done in the mid to late 50's and was well used in my family. I clearly remember pulling this book out and making my first shepherds pie. Every Christmas it was brought out to make fruit cake and fudge, I use that recipe to this day. I also still use the recipe for potato salad dressing. Some things Just can't be improved on. So looking through this book I found the tomato soup cake recipe I know we used and a moc apple pie that doesn't look like the one mom made we used ritz crackers and ......well to be honest this page was just to clean compared to all the recipes I know we used. But I thought I would share it anyway. Tomato soup cake 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup butter 1 can tomato soup 1 tsp baking soda 2 cups flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp ground cloves 1 tsp nutmeg 2 tsp cinnamon 1/4 tsp salt Mix baking soda with tomato soup right in the can, set aside. Cream together butter and sugar, add the soup mixture and mix. Mix in all the rest of the ingredients. Pour batter into a greased 9 in square pan, bake at 375 for 30-35 minutes Let cool and frost with basic confectioners sugar icing. Apple pie without apples 1 1/2 cups water 1 1/2 cups supar 1 1/2 tsp cream of tartar 1 1/2 cups salted crackers broken up 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 1/2 tsp nutmeg Boil water sugar and cream of tartar for 2 minutes Stir in crackers, cinnamon, and nutmeg Place in unbanked pie shell, top with crust and bake at 425 oven for 15 minutes then reduce to 375 and bake till golden brown. |
I have never had the "mock apple pie" with ritz crackers, however I have had one with Ritz crackers and nuts that is fabulous!!

You couldn't tell the difference from the real thing. <!-- END TEMPLATE: bbcode_quote -->"Those sound fun too care to share them?" Sorry, but I was unble to find my Pinto Bean Pie recipe. I haven't made it in years and can't imagine where that recipe could be. But I'll keep looking. I did find the Mock Coconut / Spaghetti Squash Pie recipe. Here it is. Spaghetti Squash Pie 1 medium spaghetti squash 1/2 cup sugar 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar 2 tablespoons flour 1 cup evaporated milk 1 cup water 3 egg yolks, beaten 5 tablespoons butter, melted 1 teaspoon coconut extract 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 unbaked 10" pie shell Wash squash; cut in half and discard seeds. Place squash, cut side down, in Dutch oven; add 2" water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium. Cover & cook at a gentle boil for 25-30 minutes or till a fork easily pierces the squash. Carefully remove the squash from the pan, drain, and allow it to cool. Then using a fork remove the spaghetti from inside the squash. Measure 1 1/2 cups to be used in the pie. Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Combine the sugar, brown sugar, flour, milk, water, egg yolks, butter, and extracts, mixing well. Stir in the 1 1/2 cups of squash. Pour into the pie shell. Bake at 450 degrees for 5 minutes, then reduce the temperature to 350 degrees and bake for 40 minutes or till pie is set. |
Billi, my family also made the tomato soup cake, but we added raisins and nuts to it. Tastes like a rich spice cake.
