Salald Dressing

When you see or hear "salad dressing" - what is the first thing that you think of?

I am reading one of those "home-grown" cookbooks - and a lot of the recipes are calling for "salad dressing" - without being any more specific.

I'd have to know what the recipe was for.

Here in the South, when a recipe calls for salad dressing, it means Miracle Whip!

It would depend on the recipe. Some of our old recipes say salad dressing, and you can use mayo or miracle whip/store brand salad dressing. So anything that is mayo-based would use Miracle Whip (or mayo, since that's what I buy).

If I'm thinking of something for my salad, it's going to be ranch, bleu cheese, vinaigrette, etc

I had the same question about "oleo" when I first started using old recipes!

I think of French, Ranch or Thousand Island, the question they ask in a restaurant.

In a recipe it means either mayo or Miracle Whip but wish it would specify....maybe your choice?

Well I'd think of french or ranch or whatever kind of bottled dressing for a salad. In older cookbooks though I'd think Miracle Whip.

Most of the recipes I have seen mean mayo/miracle whip. For me it would be ranch.

i make buttermilk ranch dressing with tones dressing mix. i use powered milk for the milk and love the taste.
i also make balsamic dressing with brown sugar to cut some of the tart taste.
i have not found an oil i like for dressings.
