Sloppy joes

I recipe emails a few times a week with recipes that are easy on the wallet. Some we try and this one we are glad we did. It is delicious!

You and play around with the seasonings, we added more garlic power and a tad less brown sugar as well as the mustard.

Sloppy Joe's

Ingredients

Ingredient Checklist
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • ¼ cup chopped onion
  • ¼ cup chopped green bell pepper
  • ¾ cup ketchup, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar, or to taste
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard, or to taste
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 6 hamburger buns, split

Directions

Instructions Checklist
  • Step 1Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Cook and stir lean ground beef in the hot skillet until some of the fat starts to render, 3 to 4 minutes. Add onion and bell pepper; continue to cook until vegetables have softened and beef is cooked through, 3 to 5 more minutes.
  • Step 2Stir in ketchup, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder; season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Step 3Divide meat mixture evenly among hamburger buns.

*****I drain the fat, wipe down the pan and add about a 1/3 of a pat of butter to cook the onions and bell peppers along with a pinch or two of coarse kosher salt.****

Looks good. Hubby refuses to eat tofu and I refuse to eat meat. This could work by combing protein with sauce on the plate.

Yum! Thank you for posting this Chasing Hawk. I needed a new idea for dinner. I haven't made Sloppy Joes in years.

I use diced/sliced sweet dill strips (or gherkin) pickles and or the juice in place of brown sugar. If I can find the sweet dill strips I use 2-3. The smaller gherkin I use 3-4 depending on their size.

I just brown 2 pounds lean ground chuck or sirloin. Add onions, green peppers chunks. When done I add tablespoon yellow mustard, Ketchup and barbecue sauce. Mix and heat a bit more and serve. We like leftovers.

I have done made this for many years.

I made sloppy joes using black bean burgers. Put the sauce on top of the burger. We like black bean burgers every so often.

They’re “taverns” to us and however you make them, they’re so good. Our school served them every Monday and that might have been the first boughten bun I’d ever eaten because Mom always baked our bread.

I love Sloppy Joes but they are too messy so I eat mine with a knife and fork.😂
