I found my glass jar at World Market in Wichita and in the second picture you can see that its nice & bubbly. This is 2 weeks out and I had added a cup of flour and a cup of warm water a few hours before..you can see that its already started bubbling again. And it smells a bit like beer. Nice & Sour.

It says to throw half away each time you add but I don't. I've been adding flour for 2 weeks and it is nice and frothy. And I've kept it on the counter in a glass jar. The first week it had alot of Hooch so I stopped adding water. The site that I got my info from says that you get a feel for it..and I have to say never having done this before I quickly developed the "feel".

First Loaf!

I love sour dough pancakes made with our local New Hope Mills Whole Wheat Pancake Mix plus the starter.

I keep my starter in the refrig and pull it out every 3 months if I haven't used it and "feed" it flour and water, let it ferment overnight, then back in the refrig. Kept one going over 20 years this way! Love sourdough bread, pancakes, etc. but the low carb diet has kept me from baking as often as I'd like.

My "Gracie" (for Gray -C, with the C for cat) looks just like this Clyde, and she lays that way to get her tummy rubbed.

Anyway, I have the recipes in a file attachment (kinda long) so I"d need regular email addresses, or real address for snail mail booklet.

Mmmmm I love Sour Dough Bread!!!

Um.... Do you have a recipe for the starter???

Edit to say I saw the link!!!

Cathleen Colson 06-24-2011 12:56 PM

My original starter was 1 cup of milk warmed to 90-100 degrees, 3 tablespoons plain yogurt mixed in a jar and covered. Put it in a warm place for 24 hours (top of the water heater!) until thick like yogurt. Stir in 1 cup of flour till smooth. Let sit, lightly covered, for 2-5 days till bubbly and sour smelling. Keep in refrig., feeding with equal parts water and flour every few months, letting it sit on counter overnite till bubbly each time. If you feed it milk instead of water, it will be a stronger sour taste. Once I got it to the taste I liked, I stopped giving it milk and switched to water. I made it while camping in a tent one summer, kept it warm to get it started by putting the jar inside my sleeping bag!

I make sourdough bread, but it's not this recipe and I think I will try some of these recipes. My bread didn't turn out well this week.
