Sugar
Has anyone ever froze granulated sugar?? Thanks
|
Although freezing is ideal for preserving many foods, it's not the best choice for granulated sugar. Sugar easily picks up off-odors that might be present in other frozen foods and can develop a musty taste. It also becomes lumpy if exposed to even a little moisture, another reason you shouldn't store it in the refrigerator either. - http://oureverydaylife.com/can-freeze-granulated-sugar-30722.html

No, but we had to put some in the fridge for a while. There was no room in the plastic container we use, and the ants could smell it.
|
If it's properly packaged I don't see a problem at all.
|
I'm curious as to why you would want to.
|
I keep mine in the fridge in the back. in another fridge, it froze and no problems.
|
Why not put it in a glass jar - with a lid - or a tupperware/or tupperware-like container?
|
I try to keep granulated sugar "dry" so it does not get hard and clump up.
I don't remember ever having bugs in sugar. Flour and other grain products will sometimes grow livestock. |

ditto .... am wondering why there might be a need to do so? |
I am curious too as to why you would want to? If you are having ants get into it, just put in a plastic or glass container. Sugar will keep indefinitely if stored in an airtight container. Personally, I would not want to waste the freezer space for sugar. However, I do keep flour and cornmeal in the freezer as they can and do attract bugs!

I have a FoodSaver and I put mine in the FoodSaver bags, vacuum seal them and then store the bags in a pop corn can that I received for Christmas one year. They keep really well that way.

I put Sugar,Flour,Cornmeal,in the freezer all the time without a problem
|
yes all the time , flour also .

I've never refrigerated or frozen sugar; but do refrigerate flour and those type products; things will 'hatch' out of the flour products, eventually if not used and recycled out frequently. I'm not so sure it's the critters that 'find' the flour products as them hatching out of the product if not used often. Either way it's disheartening to find bugs crawling around in your crackers or flour. Ewwww

i have never tried freezing but have dry canned using a vacuum sealer. I think the wide mouth jars work the best and stay sealed for a long time. I keep a lot of dried foods this way. check you tube for ideas and how to do it.

Thanks for all your replies. The reason for asking is that I got a 50 lb bag really cheap and needed to store it.

I keep my bulk sugar and flour in the freezer, and have for about 10 years. However I do not keep anything else in that particular chest (NON frost free) freezer - just bulk supplies.
I have never noticed a problem with picking up odors or tastes, but then all the veggies and stronger stuff is in a different freezer. |
I would not put sugar in the freezer, it will not spoil at room temperature.
I keep nuts and whole wheat flour in the freezer, as it takes longer to use those up and they could attract insects. I have never had bugs get into the sugar. I buy sugar and flour in 10 kg (22 pound) bags. |
My concern would be moisture getting in and causing sugar to harden into a brick. I say that because I forgot a bag of sugar in the van one winter-by the time I found it, it was a brick. I ended up busting it into large chunks to be dissolved in Kool-aid(too frugal to throw it out)

I think it depends on what kind of freezer you have. If you have one of those that are self-defrosting, I'd do a test first for a week or so. I find that the heat/freeze cycle of these typs of freezer cause any moisture in the bag to freeze, then thaw even with those vacuum seal kind of bags.
