I cut up a large McIntosh apple for breakfast but it was sour/tart so I only ate part of it. The rest is sitting here by my computer turning brown.
I'm going to stick it in the fridge for now, but I know I won't want to eat those brown chunks later. Any ideas on what to do to rescue those chunks? I don't want recipes where I'd have to go get more apples, I just don't want these pieces to go to waste. Thanks! |
Stick them in a microwave safe bowl.
Add a dab of butter or margerine (whatever you like) Sprinkle on cinnamon and sweenter to taste Zap until it's hot. It takes like apple pie filling! You can eat it alone, on toast or over ice cream. |
To keep the apples from turning brown, put them in a bowl with lemon juice. It will keep them white looking. McIntosh are great cooking apples! Bake them in the oven with brown sugar/cinnamon sprinkled on them. Deelish!

Apple pancakes!!! yum just mix
them in with the batter and walaa. I happen to be addicted to apple pancakes, I make a whole batch and refridgerate them n when ever im in the mood for them just zap em in the microwave for a min or 2 |
Thanks, all!
n2scraplvr, I know the lemon trick, but they were already brown. In fact, I was surprised at how fast they went brown. Lisa & n2scraplvr, topping them with butter, cinnamon and brown sugar sounds perfect! I'd been thinking that if I hadn't cut it up, I could have made a baked apple. pinklissamel, apple pancakes sound divine - but I'm hopeless at making pancakes. However, I can manage crepes, so maybe next time I'll do that... ohh, yeah! |
cut them up and put them in with some oatmeal and cinnamon when you're cooking it. Some brown sugar on top, mmm...

Oh you are SO lucky to have Macintosh apples this late in the season!!!! I can only find them here in Denver during November & December... I would microwave it w/ cinnamon & sugar, with a dab of whipped cream. Or, use it in a dutch pancake for breakfast.

That's easy--apple crisp.

Ok, this sounds gross but it really does taste good.
Peel and cut up an apple. Dice one onion (sweet onions are best). Melt about 1-2 tablespoons of butter in a skillet. Add about 1 tablespoon of sugar and cinnamon to taste. Add the apple and onion and saute until they are tender. |
That is a really old recipe. I remember reading it in one of the Little House on the Prairie books. I've never tried it, but have had others tell me it is very good. My mom used to make fried apples. The same as yours, but no onions.

perfect for pie or tarts.

Good in candied sweet potatoes: this is a quick recipe.
1 - 15 ounce can sweet potatoes or yams(drain most of juice) cut up 1 small apple and mix in 2 Tbsp. Brown sugar 1 or 2 Tbsp. dry powdered orange or pineapple jello Cook in microwave 4 or 5 minutes, stirring every 2-3 minutes. |
apple muffins, applesauce

Thanks for the additional wonderful ideas!
No, the leftovers of one apple wouldn't be enough for a pie, though. But apple crisp is one of my favorite dishes! Anyway, I'll know for next time. vjengels, you said you can't get Macs this late in the season in Colorado, the point is that it wasn't a very good one. We do have them here - year round, I think - but I pine for Jonathans, which they just don't have on the East Coast. QuiltMania, I adore onions, so that actually sounds good to me. Actually, it sounds like sweet & sour red cabbage - without the cabbage, lol. |

Put in microwave with sugar cinnamon and sugar. Delish.

I cut up bad apples or use apple cores to boil & then simmer on the stove with cinnamon & ground cloves added to the water. It doesn't take long for the house to smell wonderful. I continue to add water throughout the day as it simmers down. :)
