First off, those suckers are hard! I use a large butcher knife and my kitchen hammer to slice right down the middle. Place the knife lengthwise across the rutabaga and where the knife tip extends beyond the rutabaga, tap that firmly with the hammer until the knife cuts all the way through. I then cut the halves into 1 inch slices. This makes the slices easy to peel with a peeling knife. After that I cut into 1 inch cubes and put them in a saucepan covered with water to boil. Once the cubes are soft, I drain and mash with butter.

you can use them in a number of ways. I like chunking them with with a roast, carrots, potatoes. You can use then in stews, veggie soup, mashed. A rutabaga is the "love child" of a cabbage & turnip star cross love affair
Here I just entered the word rutubaga recipes .... and tada!!

Here's a hint .... zap in the microwave for a bit first.
That will help to soften the beast and make your mutilation a little easier.

If it has been waxed ... wrap in paper towels before zapping, so you don;t have a puddle of wax to deal with.

To be Honest .... IMHO .... the best thing to do with rutabagas/turnips is to refuse them in the first place!
And not to let them follow you home!!!!!!

First I scrub with a veggie brush! Then parboil enough to be able to peel. Then cut size I want. Drizzle a little oil and toss. drain oil off pop in oven on baking sheet about 325-350 for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes (check for doneness). Season to taste.

I do buy them to put in soup. Also have cooked...boil the heck out of them, then you can mash them like a potato.

I cut mine like Tartan...only I say a few choice words along the way. I steam the chunks along with some chopped carrots. When they're soft I mash them with cheese (aged cheddar) and maybe add an egg or some milk or both, pop them into a casserole dish & bake them for about 1/2 hour, yummy! That's how I taught myself to " like" the turnip family.....

My mom use to cube them and fry them in butter with salt and pepper, they were the best!!! I don't know if she boiled them first but it makes sense that it would be the best way to do them before frying.
