I too have tried everything that doesn't move, lol. But my guess is that fabrics that are really stiff like heavy denim or upholstery weights will not give a good result. But everything seems to work...

You can do either side, in the case of the flap I followed the design of the fabric from the right side, but many times I stitch from the TM side so I can see the stitching better. Your choice!

Batting stiffens the results and stitching too close with the batting really makes it rigid. If you want that effect, go for it-like for a bag. But if you want flexible, farther is better.

I have made the bag you are going to make about a dozen times. Also almost all the other patterns that are available. If you are not using batting, I like the stitching to be about 3/4 of an inch...
