If its a baby quilt, I recommend 100% cotton...
If its a baby quilt, I recommend 100% cotton batting, not polyester. Cotton is more breathable, hypo allergenic and is a better choice for a baby quilt all around.

The glass would probably as much as a mat on sale. Get the mat, it will be worth it in the long run. The glass is dangerous and will dull the blades which are expensive to replace.
