I really like the colour choices and like both...
I really like the colour choices and like both the layouts. Love it that changing the layout can make two different looking quilts. My choice is layout 2. Well done, I'm sure he will love it.

Thanks and lovely to meet you. That's a good idea - wall hanging size and slowing the machines speed. A four patch would be good place to start to learn piecing. Tote bags are also very popular...
