I've used perle cotton to tie quilts but you could use button hole thread or any coarse thread that wouldn't look cutesy to DH.

You should be able to easily push the lever back...

You should be able to easily push the lever back and bring them back up....seems my machine which is a Kenmore sometimes does this. Turn it off and back on...sew a little..see if something doesn't...
