I use a small paint brush. It gives me great control. Also I use those little medicine cups with about a teaspoon of glue at a time. They both wash out with a little bit of vinegar.

Near as I can tell the only thing holding the thread is the slots on the cover and the bigger spring which must catch the thread when you wrap it into the slot on the cover. Like I said very akward....
