I recommend trying a small project, like a pin cushion, first to see if you are cutting the strips wide enough to show up the fabric.

Zig Zag Salvage Quilt

I finished the quilt last week. I have been collecting salvage strips for about 10 years.
The salvage edges were cut with an additional 1 to 2 inches so the fabric would show.
