Did you clean the tension discs? Sometimes there's a buildup of gunk in there that interferes with tension. I don't always take them apart, sometimes just running an alcohol pad between them works. ...

You're right Quiltnnan there have been threads about this and it seems those who put a lot of time and effort into restoring old machines don't agree with repurposing but I guess to each their own....

Cover the end of the magnet with a thin plastic bag secured with string or rubber band. When it's full of pins just turn it inside out and give it a tug...you end up with a baggie full of pins...
