If you are looking for a machine with a large throat space, you could look at a Husqvarna or a Baby Lock or Bernina which all have anywhere from 8 to 12 inch throat openings depending on the machine...

I did my Dresden Plate petals just like Irishrose just explained. It's a bit of work but it turns out well. I used the pinking sheers to cut it after sewing.
