    My favorite backing for lap quilts is fleece. Doesn't shrink, and you don't need a middle batting. They are very lightweight and warm.

    Is the prewashed flannel 100% cotton? Flannel with polyester in it will pill, no matter what you do. Ever try to sleep on flannel sheets that have polyester in them? Like sleeping on sandpaper!

    By all means, use a rotary cutter whenever possible, but I find that when I cut flannel I have to clean the rotary cutter every now and again, as both the cutter and the mat can get a little fuzzy.
