Yup, I have one and it works fine with 15x1 needles, it's just a matter of timing the eye of the needle to the hook. Distance from the eye to the hook doesn't really matter.

I think that might be the problem: those three nubs on the washer are what the screw stops against when you loosen the knob. If the washer's turned the wrong way, you won't be able to turn it far...
