Wonderful. It warms my heart to see these beautiful old machine restored to use, and the 66 is a great machine. I love the way they sound. We have one electric, one treadle, one handcrank.

The only Brother I have lives in Iowa and can't sew a stitch. But the exact contours of our love for these old machines are not as important as the love itself. I understand how painful it is to...

Hi, I took delivery today of a backup/parts machine for my 4100, though it looks good enough to fix it up in its own right. Amongst all the goodies was the original manual, and folded up in the...

In a few weeks here, it might get above freezing. When it does, we get mud, then black flies, then we work like crazy to get ready for the next winter. New Englanders love this stuff. It's a disease,...

Come to think of it, this green reminds me a little of the original green Fiestaware, with a uranium-based glaze pigment, often alleged to be worrisomely radioactive. Same time period too. Hmmm.

I've been on the lookout for one of these. Should be pretty light? Does it sound like a featherweight? I always thought the aluminum-bodied machines sound a little clattery: not a bad thing, but not...

Yep. The tensioner on the faceplate is different, likewise the swung-around take-up lever: looks like a 15-91, so it's en famille, as the Japanese say. Underneath it looks like straightforward class...

I've looked it over, and aside from a few tiny pecks, it looks perfect (The case in micro-ocelot contact paper, half adrift, not so much!). I put a belt on it, and it went round-and-round and...

    A Study in Green(ishness)

I agreed to meet a guy, cash in hand, in the parking lot at the VA in White River Junction, Vermont. He turned out to be a very craggy and somewhat sad-looking guy, a Viet Nam vet maybe, so I knew...

I have seen a 1955 ad with this machine in this color. They were first imported in 1953. The Morse lawsuits, I thought, were more about obscuring the "Made in Japan" label than about the machinery,...

Heh heh. I wrote an essay once on the proper use of the hammer. My thesis was that you can best tell an expert, seasoned mechanic by how he uses his hammers (and his torches). He knows which hammer...

    At last (almost)

I have been struggling with this Morse 4100 for a month. It's a '53 or '54, I think, one of the earlier Morse Foto-Matics. The brochure says that the grey color was designed by Japanese scientists...

Those kookie aftermarket cranks work better than their loosey-goosey construction might suggest. I put one on a 66, a 1921 with the correct handwheel in place. I mounted it in a shelf next to her old...
