I have read repeatedly that wool batting is best to show off the quilting on a quilt that will hang -- and wool is lighter than cotton.

I love the back to be a surprise. A color pop, maybe some extra piecing, or an unobstructed view of the quilting. Definitely don't worry about matching colors, IMO!
