On my 540 that selector lever is stuck in the normal stitch position, it won't move to the 1-12...

My 540 has speed controller electronic components built into a casing beneath the motor.
There's a larger silver capacitor (about the size of an AA battery) and 2 smaller black ones about 1/2" long...

I've seen the youtube vids of needle / rotary needle bobbin timing for various machines, but none of the rotary needles look anything like my 117 and 540 rotary needles, so it's hard to relate them....

Well, now I have my 540 and have taken the bobbin 'area' components apart, with these conclusions:
It looks as if the 540 rotary needle and bobbincase are the same and will fit the 117. That's good!...
