IMHO, I would make three solid borders - primary colors: red first, then yellow and finally yellow. I think you should make them the size that pleases you!

I think the additional fabric would get lost on the front...not enough contrast. It would make a great backing, though. Maybe use a dark blue and the gold in your block for borders after you decide...
