I'm a little confused as to why the 2 1/2" x 5"...

I'm a little confused as to why the 2 1/2" x 5" goose would not be 3 3/8 x 6 1/4, rather than 3 5/8 x 6 3/4 if you are adding 7/8 and 1 1/4 for any size....am I reading something incorrectly?
