I'm 35 and I think of our oldest, civil war-era, scrap quilts as vintage. I think fabric choice makes the biggest difference. Maybe some nice bright 50's colors with a traditional pattern?

I used a fleece backing on a lap quilt once and it was very successful. No batting. Just do a grid quilting pattern. It wont detract from the panel.

I really can't say how strongly I would NOT recommend Joann's flannel. I just lived through a devastating quilt disaster involving a bleed-through with a flannel backing. Don't do it!!!
