If it were mine I would not paint it nor use it for a baby. I would clean it up if needed, then put a pretty baby doll in it and use it for a decorative piece and share the back story with anyone...

Folding quilts

That is how I was taught, stuff them in pillow cases. I've never had creases in a quilt when done this way. The idea of using the safety pin in a corner is a good one.
