I have seen pictures of quilts that were hand quilted useing big stitches ( maybe 1/4"). Has anyone here tried that method? I'm giving it some thought but haven's committed yet.

I agree! Sashing is needed but not nessasarily white. I would choose one of the colors in your blocks and use that. It should be a solid, perhaps a blue or green. IMO
