I too would experiment, if that is the look you want. Lots of fiber artists use all kinds different fabrics and materials. I don't know why you couldn't have batting on the outside of the quilt....

I put my iron on the cotton level (it is level 6 out of 7 on my iron) when I use best press. I love that stuff, buy it by the gallon on amazon. I've never had it flake.
