Got it! Because of some advice I got elsewhere that, "dogs don't wear out", I decided to have another look. What I found was that the dog retracted properly when I operated the machine manually...

I looked through hundreds of pictures of feed...
I looked through hundreds of pictures of feed dogs for sale. This one is the closest I could come and it looks very similar to what is in my machine. It says it's for a Bernina but doesn't list any...
