Yes you want the glue dry so you need to set it...

Yes you want the glue dry so you need to set it with the iron. Also if you don't set it, the fabric doesn't really seem to stay stuck together.

No aleene's tacky glue is not the same and will very likely mess up your machine. Also keep in mind that it's elmer's school glue, not the regular elmer's. I'm pretty sure the regular stuff is not...

To me elmer's school glue is more translucent than regular old fashioned elmer's.
