I think you are right. It was originally a chip holder but now the ones I see are turned into thread holders. I see them all the time in antique shops with high prices with the thread spools in them....

I have just finished playing with my Frister and Rossmann, and yes the singer 12 boat shuttle will work just fine in this machine. The F&R shuttle however is much easier to thread than the singer 12...
