Thankyou, the penny has finally dropped, I must have been having a "Senior Moment", the fold is then used as a guide to the center of the fabric which you then align to the fold in the base fabric.

Please what do you mean by folding the 3 inch by 6 inch longways pressing and then "opening up".

When I sew all 7 pieces together on the backing are the strips (6 x 3) folded or are they flat...
