Thanks for all your help. After speaking to people here and from the UK it seems that this is common in US but rare in UK, especially one from 1912.

Thanks for your help - the rest of the serial number is G23. Looking at the serial numbers from Singer that means it's from 1910. I've shown another photo of the cabinet as requested. It's in good...
