If you don't have a darning foot for your machine or, as in the case with my White treadle no darning/hopping foot was ever made for it, you would use the Schmetz spring needle.

I had one I used on a White treadle machine. It worked pretty slick. You do have to be aware of your speed so you don't move it too fast causing it to flex and break. On the treadle I didn't have any...
