I do find the thread size can be a limiting factor on the long bobbin. If the thread is too heavy it won't go through the needle hole.

I use an electric Dremmel but I have it plugged into a sewing machine foot control which is plugged into a dimmer swithch - it goes plenty slow and the Dremmel was inexpensive.

That Singer 66 looks like one well loved machine - it should be one of the best to use.
BTW the Singer 600 (T&S) are good machines when the bobbin winder works.

The 185 is a wonderful machine - it is a lot like a Singer 99 or 66. The Singer 285 looks the same but is not as nice.
