Amelia,

I got the J-A number chart I'm using from the Yahoo Japanese machine group. J-A 12 was made by Brother.
The other alpha numeric group is probably the serial number.

Some of them are complicated. You need to adjust three or four different controls to get certain stitch patterns. Others are so simple it's funny.

And I'll bet you they did charge more for...
