Owl.. yes you really need 60 inch fabric, I use Jersey knit or else you will have to double the fabric. Yes, you can slip the pillows out for easy washing because the back is as a pillow sham....

Wonnie, the pic where you see the pillow, that gap closes right up and when you accordian fold them, it's inside. I had pulled that gap open so you could see the pillow before I closed it. HTH.
