I only back stich my rag quilts at the beginning and end of joining blocks, at beginning and end when joining rows, and all the intersections - there is lot of layers and this helps stabilize them...

I am with you, as I do not like purple either but accepted a request to make purple quilt for a wedding gift. If I knew that bride loves purple I would have never agreed to it :)
